South East Queensland News

QLD vs NZ in South East Queensland!

The Toowoomba club will host the Cooper Cup competition to be played between New Zealand and Queensland on the 19th & 20th of July, 2008. This clash will be in addition to the club carnival to be held on the same weekend at the Oakey Racecourse featuring Open, Mixed, Junior and Sub-Junior competition. For more information see the carnival invitiation.

Stanley Rivers - Proposed Masters Competition:

The Stanley Rivers Club are proposing to run a Masters competition at their annual carnival this year, and are calling for early nominations to confirm the viability of this proposal. Please see this attachment for full details of the competition and contacts.

Cunningham Carnival 17th & 18th May:

An exciting goal for goal final in the Leonard family trophy for the A grade saw Warwick defeat Tansey 14-13. Tansey had possession of the ball and were heading downfield when the bell rang at the end of the final chukka. The absence of Paul McGrath and Matt Johnson did not affect the closeness of these teams. Trent Collins playing the three for Tansey won best horse and rider in the A Grade. See full results here.

Warwick
also won the A Grade Mixed and Junior competitions. Host Club Cunningham won the B Grade and C Grade and were runner up in the F Grade. Melissa Kerr and John Cleary won best horse and rider awards.

Beautiful conditions early Saturday took steep slide by mid afternoon. A quick storm with a little hail and some lightning did not stop play. Sunday was chilly.

When a major event was cancelled at Quirindi players from Corio (Victoria), Muswellbrook and Quirindi travelled the extra distance to Cunningham. A team from Sydney also continued their journey. Sydney lost to Tansey by 3 goals in the 5 team A Grade round robin.

The general opinion was that the grounds were great to play on and the facilities better than any in Victoria. No major injuries to either horse or rider over almost 100 games involving 300 horses attests to the safety of the sandy loam at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve.

Two teams of young and talented players travelled the 8 hours from Charleville to make 49 teams competing at the carnival.

Samford Cancelled:

The Samford Club has announced that they will not be competing this year due to a decline in playing members. As such, the annual carnival on the 9th & 10th August has been cancelled for 2008.

Equine Influenza:

The Equine Influenza outbreak has been controlled and horse movement has resumed around the state.
